New from 313 Audio

The BPM of any song, live.

Hold your phone near the speaker and the tempo shows up in about five seconds, precise to a tenth of a beat. Made for DJs, producers, dancers and runners.

Everything you need to count a song.

One screen, one big number, and the few extras DJs and producers actually use.

Live from the mic

It listens to whatever's playing in the room, from a club system to a car stereo, and updates twice a second.

Precise to a tenth

It measures across several beats at once, so a song at 127.9 shows as 127.9, not a rounded guess.

Half or double, one tap

Drum and bass is 174 or 87 depending on who's counting. Tap ½× or 2× once and it stays in your range, song after song.

Tap tempo

No steady beat? Tap along instead. Tap tempo is free forever, even without the unlock.

Delay times

Delay and reverb times in milliseconds at the detected tempo, straight, dotted and triplet.

Nothing recorded

Sound is analysed on your phone and thrown away. No account, no ads, no tracking.

How it hears the beat

Every few milliseconds the app checks which frequencies just got louder. Drum hits and note attacks show up as sharp spikes, and the beat is the rhythm those spikes repeat at.

It compares the last 10 seconds of spikes against every tempo from 50 to 220 BPM and picks the one that lines up best. Because it measures across several beats at once, the number is precise to a fraction of a BPM. It keeps checking twice a second, so it follows along when the DJ changes tracks.

It's built by 313 Audio, the team behind the 313-303 acid synth and the MOTOR synth plugins. In our tests on 698 real recordings it found the right tempo, or exactly half or double it, 94% of the time.

Hardest cases: live bands that drift, songs without drums, and waltzes or other 3/4 songs. For those, Tap tempo is the better tool.

Questions

When is the app out?

We're finishing it now. Leave your email at the top of this page and we'll send one message the day it's in the App Store and Google Play.

How much does it cost?

It's free to download. Tap tempo is always free, and your first 10 songs of live detection are free so you can check it works for your music. After that, a one-time $2.99 purchase unlocks it for good. No ads and no subscription.

How accurate is it?

On songs with a steady beat it's usually within half a BPM, and the small number under the readout shows the decimal. Live music that speeds up and slows down is harder, and so are songs without drums. If a reading looks off, check it with Tap tempo.

Why would it show half or double the tempo?

Many songs can be counted at two speeds. Drum and bass is 174 or 87, trap is often 140 or 70. Press 2× or ½× once and the app keeps showing tempos in that range, even for the next song, until you press Auto.

Can it measure a song playing on the same phone?

Not reliably, because it needs to hear the song through the microphone. Play it on another phone, a speaker or a laptop, or use Tap tempo.

Is my audio recorded?

No. The sound is analysed in your phone's memory to measure the tempo and is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. See the BPM Detector privacy notes.

What are the delay times for?

Producers set delay and reverb times to the song's tempo so the echoes land on the beat. The app shows each note length in milliseconds at the detected BPM, plus dotted and triplet versions.
